Halley Stevensons weatherproof waxed cotton fabric

A conversation with Daniel Gu

Our team recently held a meeting with Daniel Gu, co-founder of MotivMfg, an independent design and production studio situated in Beijing. MotivMfg draws inspiration from the city’s robust industrial presence, which is evident in their ongoing exploration of workwear traditions and tailoring techniques. Daniel Gu’s family in Taiwan has a rich history of tailoring that spans three generations. He acquired his expertise from his grandfather, carrying on the tradition of craftsmanship and skill.

Daniel emphasises the significance of quality tailoring by highlighting the interaction between the body and the fabric. He underscores the importance of cut and fabric by explaining that he personally drafts and cuts each initial prototype before sending it to the pattern makers.

Make your own vintage...

MotivMfg prioritises sustainability by focusing on the longevity and durability of vintage workwear. Daniel explained that while many believe clothing loses value with each wear, he thinks the opposite is true. He believes that clothing gains value as it is worn. The way waxed cotton wears and moulds to the body gives the garment character and makes it unique to the wearer. Additionally, by offering repairs, MotivMfg ensures that their garments are made for long-lasting use.

We asked Daniel why he chose to work with Halley Stevensons. He explained that he enjoys the sustainability and unique nature of the fabric. It gives MotivMfg the ability to recreate the look and feel of vintage garments. With wear, customers can ‘make their own vintage.’

We’re thrilled to be working with Daniel, a true ambassador of innovative design who shares our passion for new developments. It was an absolute pleasure to have him visit our factory.
